Steve Nicoli, 42, of Middletown passed away on Sunday after a battle with COVID-19.

"Steve lost his battle with COVID-19 and it was a devastating loss to all of us," a GoFundMe states. "Steve's sudden passing is especially tragic in that he leaves behind his 13-year-old son Mikey, who also lost his mother, Marie, in 2013. At the age of 13, and with a birthday coming up next week, Mikey will have to adjust to life moving forward, after losing both of his parents."

Nicoli was an Army veteran, a father and step-father, husband-to-be and the founder of Hudson Valley Honor Flight.

"Our hearts are heavy and the entire Hudson Valley Honor Flight Family is grieving. Steve's passion for our country, his community, and our veterans is the reason Hudson Valley Honor Flight has honored so many veterans these past ten years," Hudson Valley Honor Flight wrote on Facebook.

Hudson Valley Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization that flies veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the war memorials.

"I am heartbroken to hear about the passing of Steve Nicoli who died after a battle with COVID-19," Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus said. "Steve was a wonderful young man, a proud veteran. My thoughts and prayers are with his fiancé Nicole and his entire family."

Nicoli is a former member of the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. Hudson Valley Honor Flight is setting up a memorial outside its headquarters on West Main Street in Walden.

A GoFundMe was started to help his fiance and young children. As of this writing over $22,000 has been raised.

"Steve was 42 and taken from us and his family unexpectedly and far too soon. His passion for veterans, our community, and his family was apparent to anyone who interacted with him," the GoFundMe states.
